LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
She’s known for her offbeat dress sense and her past as a child sitcom star, but Mary-Kate Olsen is growing up on the big screen this summer in “The Wackness.”
A Sundance Film Festival award winner, “The Wackness,” features Mary-Kate as bohemian pothead Union, friend to the film’s stars – Luke Shapiro and Olivia Thirlby.
The coming-of-age indie movie attracted the actress, who recently starred in Showtime’s “Weeds,” because of her character’s openness.
“I think it’s a part of me,” Mary-Kate told Access of playing Union. “I think that’s why I was attracted to the part in general. There’s a part of, I think, everyone that wants to be that free spirit, naive and young.”
Though she plays a youth, Mary-Kate has a makeout scene with 64-year-old Ben Kingsley’s character, psychologist Dr. Squires, and some reports claim the smooch times in at almost 30 seconds.
“You’ll have to see,” Mary-Kate said of the lip lock. “You’ll have to check out the film. It was fun.”
Later tonight, Mary-Kate will head back to California to continue filming a part for ABC’s “Samantha Who?,” whose set she’s been on this week.
“It’s a talented, talented cast,” she said of the Christina Applegate-fronted comedy. “It’s been a pleasure to work with everyone.”
