LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Kirsten Dunst has opened up about her visit to rehab earlier this year.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Dunst checked in to Utah’s Cirque Lodge in February for undisclosed reasons. In a new interview with E! online columnist Marc Malkin, Dunst explained why she went to the facility.

“I didn’t go to Cirque Lodge for alcohol abuse or drug abuse,” Dunst told the columnist. “I went there for depression.”

Dunst said she consulted a number of people – from doctors to friends and family – before heading in for treatment.

“It was a good six months before I decided to go away,” Dunst said. “I was struggling, and I had the opportunity to go somewhere and take care of myself. I was fortunate to have the resources to do it. My friends and family thought it was a good idea, too. But I didn’t know where to go. My doctor recommended Cirque Lodge.”

The actress, who is currently shooting “All Good Things” with Ryan Gosling in New York City, said she went on the record about her depression to clear up the rumors that have hit the tabloids about her Cirque Lodge visit.

“There’s been a lot of misrepresentation about what is going on in my life, and it’s been very painful for my friends and family,” she said. “Everyone feels like they have to defend me. They hear the rumors, and it puts them in a defensive position. Now that I’m feeling stronger, I was prepared to say something.”
