New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez has been grabbing headlines for months about a lot more than his baseball talents. Whether it’s his divorce from ex-wife Cynthia Rodriguez or a rumored relationship with pop star Madonna, the third baseman can’t seem to stay out of the spotlight.

“We live in a world right now where everyone’s keeping score. And it doesn’t stop when the games end…They’ve crossed over,” A-Rod told Details in its April issue. “And you have the Internet stuff, and all these phones…It’s very intense.”

Despite constant rumors and gossip Web site reports, the Yankees star said he does not have a relationship with Madonna beyond friendship.

“Well, we’re friends,” A-Rod told the mag. “She’s an amazing entertainer. And it’s been amazing how she’s been able to stay on top for three decades. I have a lot of respect for her.”

The baseball superstar said he values the pop star’s advice and that “if there ever was any situation, she’s a great ear to have, you know?”

Despite reports that their mutual manager, Guy Oseary, introduced them, according to A-Rod, they met over real estate.

“I met her about 12 years ago in Miami, believe it or not,” he recalled. “That’s how we know each other. I was trying to buy her house, and I couldn’t afford it.”

As for ex-wife Cynthia, the slugger said they now enjoy a “wonderful relationship.”

“I’m happy the way that things are going,” he said. “But playing through all that was obviously challenging.”

A-Rod also noted that playing for New York City fans has also been a challenge, but one that has made him grow.

“New York is one of a kind,” he explained. “It’s made me ask all the tough questions. It’s brought out the best in me. There are some things I have to work on. And that part is fun.”

Adding, “Revealing the truth about yourself is always good.”
