LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Alicia Keys wants her fans to make a difference fighting AIDS.

“It wasn’t until I traveled to South Africa on my first tour in 2002 that I really understood the AIDS pandemic in Africa and how it affects people of all races, colors, religions and backgrounds,” she wrote in a USA Weekend editorial coming out this weekend. “It’s so easy to live in your own world.”

And now, she said it’s time to do something about it.

“AIDS is preventable and treatable,” she continued. “My charity, Keep a Child Alive, creates awareness about the issue in the U.S. We raise funds to provide AIDS care and treatment to children and their families in Africa and India. When you don’t have access to treatment, AIDS is a death sentence. When you do, the outcome is far different. (You can donate $5 to KCA by texting ALIVE to 90999.)”

The star further asked fans to join her on October 24 for Make a Difference Day.

USA WEEKEND Magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation — Hollywood’s leading charity — are joining forces to inspire service. Join millions on Make A Difference Day or through EIF’s I Participate program (iparticipate.org).

USA WEEKEND’s Make A Difference Day is held in partnership with HandsOn Network and supported by Newman’s Own. Find out more at makeadifferenceday.com.
