After revealing just a few (seven) of the show’s Top 24 contestants on Tuesday’s two-hour show, “American Idol,” on Wednesday night, finally gave America the full list of 12 women and 12 men that will compete for the crown in Season 9.
Among those put through were Janelle Wheeler, a wine rep from Tampa, Fla., and Tyler Grady, the ‘70s inspired shaggy-haired rocker who admitted a fondness for the vocal stylings of Robert Plant.
“I am in the Season 9, Top 24 for ‘American Idol’ and it feels great,” Tyler told the “Idol” cameras after learning the news.
Others to get the pass to the Top 24 round included Andrew Garcia, the spectacled man who did an acoustic version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” and Lilly Scott, the rocker with the grey-blonde locks.
“I’m not gonna let anybody down,” she told the judges.
Dreadlock-haired mom Crystal Bowersox got put through to the Top 24, which Simon said found the judges “all in agreement,” while Katie Stevens, the 17-year-old whose grandmother is suffering from Alzheimer’s was also put through.
“How’s your grandma?” Simon asked as Katie shrugged. “She’ll be happy.”
But two standouts failed to make the cut including Thaddeus Johnson who impressed at Hollywood Week with his “Man In The Mirror” performance and Chicagoan Angela Martin.
Angela competed in Hollywood Week this year despite the fact that her mother has been missing since Christmas, a fact not mentioned on the show. The singer’s past trips to Hollywood Week – and the reasons she left – including the murder of her father, and a jail sentence because she couldn’t afford a parking ticket, were.
Judge Kara DioGuardi was the one to deliver the sad news to Angela.
“I’m sorry, you didn’t make it,” Kara said. “Listen, you are a great singer. You know what? There are other ways to do it and you’ve got it in you”
