LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

An impressive lineup celebrities from the world of entertainment, sports and journalism have banded together for “Stand Up To Cancer,” a telethon aimed at raising funds to accelerate cancer research.

The star-studded event will be simultaneously broadcast live and commercial-free on ABC, CBS and NBC on September 5, 2008 at 8 PM, Access Hollywood has learned.

Telethon producers say they have had an outpouring of support from the entertainment industry, and hope viewers at home will follow their lead.

“The support we’ve received from the creative community is remarkable. My phone is constantly ringing with people asking, ‘What can I do and how can I help?’” a “Stand Up To Cancer” producer said in statement. “We hope viewers all over the country will do the same.”

Some of the celebrities confirmed for the cancer research telethon include, Charlize Theron, “American Idol” winner David Cook, Christina Applegate, Jennifer Aniston, Salma Hayek, NBC newsman Brian Williams, Neil Patrick Harris and Meryl Streep.

The telethon could also include a few laughs, as the animated characters Marge and Homer Simpson are also booked for the evening of goodwill.
