“Thor” isn’t due out until May 2011, but one of the film’s stars – Sir Anthony Hopkins – said fans can expect something very special.
“It’s colossal,” he told Access Hollywood’s Scott “Movie” Mantz at the Toronto International Film Festival, of the upcoming Marvel comic, which is heading to the big screen.
Anthony said Thor’s portrayer, Chris Hemsworth, really embodied the role of the Norse god and warrior.
“He’s terrific,” Anthony said. “He looks like he could conquer the universe.”
The British actor admitted to being blown away by the amount of food Chris had to put down his gullet while they were on set, in order for the 27-year-old to maintain that universe-conquering physique.
“He was eating 3,000 calories a day… He had trainers and they know all that protein stuff,” Anthony explained. “So he was eating all this stuff, working out hours a day and he’d come on set and he’d be eating. He said, ‘I’ve got to eat it!’”
While Chris was stuffing his face plenty, Anthony said he was nothing but charming.
“Chris Hemsworth – what a nice guy,” Anthony said. “He’s a very pleasant, modest guy.”
Anthony himself plays a rather unpleasant man in his September 22-due film, “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger,” one named Alfie, who leaves his wife Helena (Gemma Jones), to court a much younger woman.
“It’s a man going through a midlife crisis [who] thinks he deserves a younger woman,” Anthony told Scott of his character. “That happens a lot in life, men, I suppose. And the savage thing is, the wife is left desolate and that happens every day in our world, in this industry, the movie industry. It’s sad, it’s tragic and this man makes an idiot of himself… I think he’s a sad character.”
In his own marriage, Anthony’s third, he is devoted to his wife, Stella Arroyave, and she him. He said she is part of the reason he has been looking so well of late.
“She tells me what to eat and looks after my health. She’s younger than me, she wants me around for a long time,” Anthony said of his beloved who is nearly 20 years his junior. " I just go along with [it] because she’s wiser than me, and she’s smarter than me… Men are dogs and if I were left to my own devices, I’d probably fall apart… I think it’s wonderful because she’s smarter than me. I think women are smarter than us.”
