LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

The writers strike may be over by the time the Oscars roll around, but at least one organization has decided that a celebration isn’t in order – Vanity Fair.

The magazine announced today that they are canceling their annual Oscar party, according to columnist Nikki Finke.

"After much consideration, and in support of the writers and everyone else affected by this strike, we have decided that this is not the appropriate year to hold our annual Oscar party,” the magazine said in a statement according to Finke’s Web site.
“We want to congratulate all of this year’s nominees and we look forward to hosting our 15th Oscar party next year."

The Vanity Fair Oscar party has always been one of the most A-list events.

Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Madonna, Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Portman and Hugh Jackman were just a handful of stars that attended last year’s soiree.

This year's event was to be held at Hollywood hotspot Craft.

Finke reports that the magazine canceled the event before invitations went out.

“We decided that even if the writers strike were to end, it doesn't mean life is going back to normal immediately,” Vanity Fair spokesperson Beth Kseniak told Finke. “There's been a lot of people affected by the strike, and we just thought it wasn't an appropriate time to throw a big party."

Elton John's 16th annual Oscar party, benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation will happen, Access Hollywood has confirmed.
