LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Four contestants got the boot from “American Idol” on Thursday night, bringing the competition’s numbers down to a slimmer 20.

Garrett, Haley, the 17-year-old Peter Frampton look-a-like from Elida, Ohio was the first to get the bad news from “Idol” host, Ryan Seacrest.

Before singing for the audience one last time, the curly haired teen said he hadn’t taken Simon Cowell’s comments from Tuesday night (Simon suggested he spent too much time alone in his bedroom) seriously.

“I know I’m a pale kid,” Garrett said Thursday before leaving the stage, “but I’m happy with the way that I am, so it’s OK. I haven’t gone tanning.”

Judge Randy Jackson also had some advice for the parting contestant, advice which all the “Idols” were advised to take.

“Simon said something the other night that was completely true – every time you step up here, it has to be your complete, complete best,” Randy said.

The competition then turned to dismissing one of the girls – Amy Davis, a former Maxim model who was tagged “cabaret,” by Simon after her performance on Wednesday evening.

“It’s [all about] getting more experience and knowing who you are as an artist and picking the right song,” judge Paula Abdul told Amy before she sang on the show for the last time. “You gotta go paint that knob on the door and just go for it.”

Plus-sized model Joanne Borgella was the third contestant sent packing as several of her fellow female competitors burst into tears.

“You just never quite got it together,” Randy said. “It wasn’t your best performance and you needed it the other night.”

“It was a horrible song choice and it wasn’t a great performance and that’s a lesson learned — you can’t breeze your way through it,” Simon added.

Joanne said she planned to carry on pursuing a musical career, despite being let go.

“I’m gonna keep singing, ‘cause I love singing,” she said. “Wednesday was a crazy day for me and I know I do a better performance than that so it’s understandable.”

Eighteen-year-old Colton Berry, from Staunton, VA was the final contestant sent home.

Paula had kind advice for the young man, telling him he was “talented,” and that he had “a whole career ahead” of him, but Simon slammed the teen.

“I wouldn’t agree with Paula,” he said. “I would say, get a good job and then enjoy singing ‘cause I don’t think you’ll make a successful career out of it.”
