LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

The Oscars will keep up with the Hollywood trend of going green when the 80th Academy Awards kicks off on Sunday.

Academy President Sid Ganis announced on Friday that the ceremony is involved in using “ecologically intelligent practices” for the ceremony, an initiative they are carrying out in collaboration with the Natural Resources Defense Council, a non-partisan environmental and advocacy organization.

“Last year, in planning and producing the Oscar show, we chose supplies, resources and services designed to reduce Oscar’s ecological footprint,” Ganis said in a statement. “This year, with the guidance and support of the NRDC, we’ve been able to do even more.”

Among the ways Oscar will stay green is by using renewable wind power for their red-carpet arrivals show, their telecast and the Governor’s Ball.

A biodiesel fuel mix will power the generators used for production, press support and red carpet arrivals.

Most of the vehicles made available by General Motors for use by the Oscars production staff are zero-emission hydrogen-powered cars and hybrids.

Most of the food service ware is either reusable or biodegradable.

Programs, invitations, RSVP cards, envelopes, parking passes and other printed materials are using a minimum of 30 percent post consumer recycled content.

The Academy Awards will be telecast on Sunday on ABC.
