LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

A hospital in Shanghai was overrun with a case of Beckham-itis on Tuesday when British soccer star, David Beckham, stopped by for a visit.

With no known cure for those infected with Beckham-obsessions, police had to be called in for crowd control as hundreds of bystanders including staff, fans and the media hit the locale, desperate to catch a glimpse of the star, according to Britain’s AFP news organization.

The soccer star was making an appearance at Xinhua Hospital to visit children with leukemia.

Police were reportedly forced to close off several of the hospital’s entrances and many Becks-watchers were not allowed to leave or enter the facility for several hours.

The AFP reporter witnessed one woman in hysterics after police refused to allow her inside the facility.

A donation ceremony, set to take place outside the hospital, also had to be canceled as a result of the chaos.

Becks has been in Shanghai for an exhibition match with his team, the LA Galaxy.
