LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Her fiance may have attempted to deflect rumors his bride-to-be is expecting in an interview on Monday, but Ashlee Simpson herself set rumor mills ablaze, refusing to confirm whether or not she is expecting, during a visit to MTV earlier today.

“I just think… it’s an inappropriate question to ask any woman,” Simpson said, according to People. “For me, that’s something that I didn’t ever want to respond to, because I think it’s an inappropriate question.”

In fact, when pressed on the issue, Ashlee continued to stay on the conservative side of commenting.

“Some things, you want to keep personal, and I think that when people deny [pregnancy news], it’s probably because it’s something they want to keep personal,” she said.

On Monday, rocker Pete Wentz told MTV News in an e-mail he wasn’t aware of any pregnancy news.

“There is a witch hunt for people to be pregnant whenever they get engaged in Hollywood,” he wrote. “This is all news to me.”

In the e-mail, Wentz seemed outraged over the pregnancy report, which Us Weekly and OK! magazine claimed to break news of last week. Us Weekly even published another “Ashlee is pregnant” story on Monday.

“I can’t wait for the story about how I’m really in a gay relationship and this is all just a cover,” Wentz e-mailed. “I mean really, this is crazy…I mean we’re engaged, that’s true, and happy about it.”

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Ashlee and Pete became engaged last week after dating for almost two years.

“We know there has been a lot of speculation recently about Pete and I and we wanted our fans to be the first to know, because you guys are the best. Yes, we are thrilled to share that we are happily engaged,” Simpson wrote in a post on FriendsorEnemies.com. “Thank you for all of your support and well wishes - it means the world to us. We consider this to be a very private matter, but we wanted you to hear it straight from us.”
