2013 Emmy Surprises & Snubs: American Horror Story & Game Of Thrones In, New Girl & The Walking Dead Out

Many familiar TV favorites were nominated Thursday morning for the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards, but there were also some fresh faces in the mix while some very popular favorites were left out.

It was a good morning for “American Horror Story: Asylum” (which racked up 17 noms), “Game Of Thrones” (scored 16 noms), “Behind The Candelabra” and “Saturday Night Live” (which both earned 15 nominations) and “Breaking Bad” and “30 Rock” (which each got 13 nods). Also Netflix entered the Emmys race for the first time with nominations for “House of Cards,” “Arrested Development” and “Hemlock Grove.”

AccessHollywood.com takes a closer look at the surprise nominations and those who were snubbed!

Snubs!:

– “New Girl” stars Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield (who have received Emmy nods in the past) were passed over on Thursday morning.

– Melissa McCarthy failed to get a nod for “Mike and Molly,” but was honored for hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

– Eric Stonestreet, who won the Emmy last year for “Modern Family,” was shut out this time around, though co-stars Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ed O’Neill received nominations.

– Jon Cryer was also a winner last year for “Two and a Half Men,” but was passed over this year.

– Julianna Margulies, a usual Emmy darling, was skipped for her role on “The Good Wife.”

– “Behind The Candelabra” scored noms for Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, but Rob Lowe’s scene-stealing role as Liberace’s plastic surgeon got the knife.

-“The Walking Dead” continued to be dead in the eyes of Emmy voters.

Surprises!:

– Kerry Washington’s nom for “Scandal” is no surprise to fans, but it should be noted that she’s only the fifth African-American actress in history to receive a nod in this category. If she wins, she’ll be the first African-American actress to win the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Emmy.

– Connie Britton’s fans love her on “Nashville,” but many were surprised to hear her name read on Thursday morning.

– Netflix series stars Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and Jason Bateman all received noms for their online-only work.

– Vera Farmiga, who always turns in stellar performances, surprised some for her nomination on A&E’s “Bates Motel.”

– “Girls” star Adam Driver does amazing work on the Lena Dunham HBO series, but many were surprised to hear his name read on Thursday morning.

– Reality TV singing competitions appear to be on the way out in the eyes of Emmy voters as “American Idol” and “The X Factor” were left out, but NBC’s “The Voice” was honored.

– “Liz & Dick” – Lindsay Lohan’s universally-panned Lifetime movie about Elizabeth Taylor – surprised everyone when Emmy voters gave it two nominations, but thankfully it was for hair and makeup and not lead actress.

The 65th annual Primetime Emmys will air live on Sunday, September 22 on CBS at 8 ET/5 PT.
