Access Exclusive: Cindy McCain On The Record

Cindy McCain stood right by her husband’s side in February as he answered allegations made in The New York Times, that he may have had a romantic relationship with a lobbyist.

Now, in her first sit-down interview in which she addresses the subject, the wife of Sen. John McCain spoke to Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell about the story that threatened to bring down her husband’s presidential campaign.

“You haven’t spoken publicly about this. But what was your first reaction when you heard about the story breaking?” Nancy asked Cindy.

“I knew the truth,” Cindy McCain said. “I was angry at the newspaper, of course, but I knew the truth. I didn’t have to ask anything or talk to anybody about it. I knew the truth and I know my husband.”

But after hearing the shocking allegations, what was the first thing Cindy said to her husband?

“[I said] I love you. I know this isn’t true,” she told Nancy.

“What did he say to you?” Nancy asked.

“The same thing,” Cindy added. “Unfortunately in politics, things happen. I think that is the unfortunate side of politics and I think that is also the unfortunate side sometimes of this 24-hour news cycle that we are in now.”

And while Cindy took the news in stride, what was the situation like for the couple’s children?

“Did you even have to call your children with it? ‘Hey listen, this is coming out. I just want to prepare you,’” Nancy inquired.

“Yeah, of course. On anything we do, not just that, but on anything… we call them and tell them, ‘Look, this is going to be in and this is not going to be in,’” Cindy explained.

“How did they feel about it? Were they angry at the press?” Nancy asked.

“Angry at the press, yeah. Not at us. Not at my husband, not at anything, because they know him,” Cindy continued. “It was just about being angry at the media. It’s over with. We’ve moved on and I’m not concerned about it.”
