Alyssa Sutherland On ‘Vikings’ Love Triangle, Set Pranks

When Alyssa Sutherland’s Princess Aslaug sailed to Kattegat in the Season 2 premiere of “Vikings,” it’s fair to say Ragnar’s wife, Lagertha, was less than pleased.

In fact, after briefly considering Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) idea – both women could live with him and share him – Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) packed her things and left with their son, Bjorn.

But will the new couple – Ragnar and Aslaug – have happy times ahead? AccessHollywood.com went to Alyssa to find out about that and if she thinks the two women could have lived in harmony with just one blue-eyed hubby between them.

AccessHollywood.com: Do you think Aslaug and Lagertha could have lived in some sort of peace if she hadn’t left?

Alyssa Sutherland: I think that they’re two pretty strong women. I think what’s really cool – you know, we talk about the fact that there were instances of polygamy and that did happen, and I think what makes Lagertha even more of an exceptional character – I don’t want to talk about Katheryn’s character too much because obviously that’s all her work – but, just from my point of view, it just makes Lagertha an even more exceptional character from that time period to walk away and to say, ‘Well, you know what? No.’ And I think that adds even more to who she was at that time. And for Aslaug… I’m not sure she would have been OK with another girl hanging around. There’s a little thing that happens in Episode 2 that she gets a little annoyed at. I don’t want to spoil too much. I think that she probably has too much pride for that to happen. Aslaug knows what she wants and she knows how to get things and how to sort of move people the around her.

Access: Speaking of the people around her, what are we going to see, starting with Episode 2 and going forward, between the couple — Aslaug and Ragnar? Is it a happy union? Can we expect some nice times for the pair of them?

Alyssa: (laughs) Yeah. … I think the love triangle is a really interesting thing for viewers to watch, especially the female audience. I think that that drama – most women can relate to these things going on, so I don’t want to give too much away, but I think from where their relationship starts out at the beginning of the season and where it ends up, and sort of what they go through over the course of the season, there are things that happen. Things do change. What I think I can tell you is… Aslaug loves him. She loves her family and she wants that family unit. That’s not what she had [growing up] and she’s gonna try to do everything in her power to keep that together and to really belong to a family because she’s never had that before.

Access: What has been it like working with Travis?

Alyssa: Travis is great to work with. It’s a joy working with him. He’s got a great work ethic and keeps things lighthearted and fun all at the same time. He’s a really gifted person and has so many ideas and adds so much to that character. It’s pretty cool to be around and be a part of. Every now and then there’s a prank that happens to people as well, which is quite funny.

Access: Has he played one on you recently?

Alyssa: No. Actually, I escaped most of them. I was pretty lucky this season. I know that there were others that definitely got bags of garbage put into their cars and frogs were put into people’s offices. He’ll steal a phone on occasion and start sending people text messages from other people’s phones. I don’t think I can repeat what he says in the text messages. … We all know that he does it so if you pick up your phone and you’ve got this random text message, [it’s like], ‘OK. Travis has stolen someone else’s phone.’

“Vikings” Season 2 continues Thursday nights at 10/9c on History.
