Andie MacDowell Talks Daughter Rainey Qualley’s Upcoming Gig As Miss Golden Globe

Andie MacDowell’s daughter, Rainey Qualley, will take the stage as Miss Golden Globe on Sunday, and the veteran supermodel and actress told AccessHollywood.com she’s thrilled for her all-grown-up baby girl.

“[It was] a complete surprise,” Andie told AccessHollywood.com on Monday of her daughter being recruited for the on-stage post, one previously held by Melanie Griffith (and many years later, Melanie’s own daughter, Dakota Johnson), Laura Dern, Joely Fisher, Clint Eastwood’s daughter Kathryn Eastwood and Rumer Willis.

“[I’m] so thankful for her,” Andie continued of Rainey, a songwriter and actress. “She’s working really hard to try and make it in this business.”

Although Andie has been in showbusiness for years, including in the new ABC Family show “Jane By Design,” which she was promoting at the Television Critics Association Winter Session on Monday, Andie said it hasn’t been easy to give Rainey advice on her upcoming gig at the Golden Globes.

“I haven’t so much because I haven’t really done anything exactly like that,” she told Access. “I tried to talk to her about how she’s gonna dress and to look and see what everybody else is wearing and outside of that, I watched the videos [showing what] she had to do. I had no idea how much responsibility there really was with it. There’s a lot of responsibility… You have to be articulate. She’s a smart girl and she’s got a beautiful heart, so I’m hoping it all goes really well for her.”

Dozens of stars are set to attend Sunday’s big event, hosted by Ricky Gervais, but Andie thinks her daughter will handle her on stage position, which sees her helping out the winners on stage, just fine.

“I don’t think that [all the star power] will scare her or intimidate her because she’s been with me on sets and stuff like that,” Andie said. “I don’t think that will be difficult for her, but it will be fun for her. I remember the very first time I went to the Academy Awards was the most interesting experience, so even though I’d already had a lot of success at that point, I had not really lived here, so I hadn’t partied with everyone very much. I had a sort of naivete about myself as far as still being in awe of my peers that I put on a pedestal, that I appreciated there work. I remember getting out of a car and Angelica Huston turning around and going ‘Hello Andie,’ and it was like I had just joined the club or something. And I was like, ‘Hello Anjelica,’ and for the rest of the night, everybody called me by my first name. I’d never met them before. It was like this door just opened and there you were.”

While Rainey looks a lot like her famous mom and her dad, former model Paul Qualley, Miss Golden Globe 2012 isn’t hitting the catwalks, instead she’s acting and working on her music.

“It’s kind of hard to describe, but I can describe her voice,” Andie said, when Access asked what her daughter’s tunes were like. “She has a really rich — she looks really tiny and sweet, but she has a really hot sexy woman’s voice. Real power. Powerful.”

The Golden Globes air January 15, 2012 on NBC from 8-11 ET and 5-8 PT. “Jane By Design” airs Tuesdays at 9 EST/PST on ABC Family.
