Austin Butler Talks Romance & Drama On The Carrie Diaries (& Avoiding ‘Mom Butt’ Jeans)

Things for Carrie Bradshaw and her high school crush, Sebastian, hit a bit of a rough patch on Monday’s “The Carrie Diaries,” and it sounds like their romantic road will continue to be a rocky one.

“The walls sort of come up and then, when he puts them up and backs off from her, she’s now open and other guys might come up to her and he might get jealous,” Austin Butler, who plays Sebastian, told Access Hollywood earlier this month during a sit down interview at the Television Critics Association Winter Session in Pasadena, Calif.

On Monday’s episode, Carrie – after snooping through her dad’s legal files – found out Sebastian got kicked out of his old school because he had a fling with a teacher.

Sebastian is certainly the bad boy of Carrie’s high school years, but beneath Sebastian’s cool exterior is a wounded heart.

“Sebastian’s rich, but what also goes along with the wealth is he was just kind of left alone with the nanny growing up and so because of that, I think that’s what causes the mystery behind him, because he does kind of hold back and has sort of protection devices that he uses to not let people in very much,” Austin said of his character.

Austin said he watched the films of John Hughes to prep for his role, like “The Breakfast Club,” as well as the HBO series, “Sex and The City.”

“I started watching it in New York and I’ve watched a ton of it,” he told Access. “I’ve really fallen in love with it.

“Not only is it funny, but it touches on so many relatable topics. Everybody’s just kind of searching for love and I think that’s how everybody is in real life — whether it be like Samantha finding it through these crazy sexual affairs and stuff — everyone’s sort of seeking pure love in some sense,” he added. “So, I think that’s in all of us.”

Also helping the actor to get into character is the ‘80s fashion. But while he’s glad Sebastian has a classic look of jeans and a leather jacket, Austin admitted he makes sure those jeans fit before donning them on screen, especially because pants from the decade of excess rode a little higher.

“Yeah, you get some mom butt going on with the jeans in the ‘80s,” he laughed. “So I try to avoid the mom butt by really trying them on and trying to get them tailored.”

“The Carrie Diaries” airs Monday at 8/7c on The CW.
