Ava DuVernay Tells Oprah She’s ‘Super Curious’ To See ‘Straight Outta Compton’

Ava DuVernay really is “Straight Outta Compton,” but the director has yet to see the upcoming film based in her hometown.

The filmmaker told Oprah Winfrey on Saturday that she is “super curious” about the biopic, which depicts the start of landmark hip-hop group N.W.A. as they rise to fame within the gang-ridden Los Angeles suburb in the ’80s and ’90s.

Oprah had Tweeted the “Selma” director to ask if she’d found a chance to catch the “powerful” movie, and DuVernay replied she’s interested to see how F. Gary Gray “chronicles who [N.W.A.] were + what they did.”

Seeing her stomping grounds on the big screen is an extra incentive, she added, but it looks like DuVernay has already taken the film to heart.

“Straight Outta Compton” partnered with founding N.W.A. member Dr. Dre to launch an interactive marketing strategy for the film. Dre’s company, Beats By Dre, set up a website on which fans can generate their own meme-worthy album covers inspired from the movie, and DuVernay herself recently got in on the fun.
