‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’: About That Mid-Credits Scene

Now that many you have seen “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” AccessHollywood.com breaks down the mysterious mid-credits scene and those coveted Infinity Stones.

Before you say, “the what?!” it’s those mystical, often-found-in-space or other dimensional worlds orbs, crystals and shinning objects that bad guys in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are chasing and good guys always are trying to stop them from getting.

(*Spoiler Alert: if you have not seen “Age of Ultron” look away!)

If you were left confused by the mid-credits scene after “Age of Ultron,” we’re here to help. The purple alien seen is Thanos, played by Josh Brolin, who first appeared at the end of the first Avengers movie and then appeared again in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” He is retrieving a glove that is locked away behind numerous locked doors.

“Fine. I’ll do it myself,” he says as he reaches for a glove, which is often referred to in the Marvel comic book world as the Infinity Gauntlet.

Thanos doesn’t possess any of the Infinity Stones yet (which are called Infinity Gems in Marvel comics), but with the two movies, “Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 & 2” in the works, it’s safe to say the big purple guy will get his hands on some — or all — of them.

So what do the Infinity Stones actually do and have we seen them in other Marvel movies?

Space Stone: called the Tesseract in the MCU

This was the first Infinity Stone to appear in the MCU, seen in “Thor” and “The Avengers,” and then referenced in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor: The Dark World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The glowing blue cube allows those who possess it to travel through space to new locations with ease. Current location: Asgard.

Reality Stone: called the Aether in the MCU

The Aether (depicted on the big screen as the menacing red liquid that almost killed Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster character) was a major plot point in “Thor: The Dark World.” The Aether is able to convert matter and dark matter and has massive destructive capabilities. After the Aether was removed from Jane’s body in the Thor sequel, it was given to the Collector, played by Benicio Del Toro. Current location: In the Collector’s possession in Knowhere.

Power Stone: called The Orb in the MCU

This stone was the major plot point of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and was first seen when Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/ Star-Lord stole it at the beginning of the film. Thanos then ordered Ronan the Accuser to try and steal The Orb. The stone is capable of doing really powerful things (as the name implies), like blowing things up, even planets! After a whole movie’s worth of fighting to get it and Orb hand-offs and fake-outs, Thanos failed to acquire it. Current location: Protected by the Nova Corps on Xandar.

Mind Stone: Assumed to be the crystal from Loki’s Scepter in the MCU

The crystal that Loki wreaked havoc with in the “Avengers” and then was stolen by HYDRA and used to control Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch has now been granted to The Vision, played by Paul Bettany. The stone (obviously) can control other people’s minds. Current location: on Vision’s forehead (assuming this actually is the Mind Stone).

The two remaining stones in the MCU

The Soul Stone and the Time Stone, have yet to be revealed on the big screen. If Thanos is able to collect all six stones, things are pretty much over for The Avengers and everyone else in the universe.

But, with six more planned movies in the MCU before “Infinity War – Part 1” and two before “Infinity War – Part 2” and a slew after, the missing two stones and Thanos are bound to show up!

And that’s not all! Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently revealed that there is more than one Infinity Gauntlet. The first glove was spotted in “Thor” during a scene in Odin’s vault of treasure room, but the glove that is seen in “Age of Ultron” is a different accessory of destruction.

“There are two different gloves. That was not Odin’s vault that you see at the end,” he told Cinema Blend.
