On Wednesday, the actors were asked by Digital Spy about whether Black Widow would ever get involved with their characters, Hawkeye or Captain America, and their responses (which some interpreted as jokes) drew fire from many fans.

“She’s a slut,” Jeremy said of Black Widow, as Chris laughed.

“I was going to say something along that line … a complete whore,” Chris chimed in.

“Trick,” Jeremy added.

“She’s a slut,” Chris said, repeating his co-star’s comment. “She’ll just flirt with everybody.”

“She has a prosthetic leg anyway,” Jeremy said of Black Widow.

“Leading everybody on,” Chis said, shaking his head.

On Thursday, both the actors issued apologies for their comments.

“Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America,” Chris said in a statement. “We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.”

“I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone,” Jeremey said. “It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”
