Avril Lavigne Rocks To The Top Of The Billboard Charts

Avril Lavigne’s new album debuted at Number One this week on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart, selling 286,358 copies.

“The Best Damn Thing” has already sold more than 1.5 million copies internationally, fueled by a combo of Lavigne’s previous successes as well as the strength of the single “Girlfriend,” which also jumps to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Downloaded Singles charts.

The Canadian pop-punk singer has referred to her new album (her third) as “hands down, the best I’ve ever made,” and Rolling Stone magazine praised it for its “big doses of sass, anger, and vulnerability.”

Nine Inch Nails scored big with the debut of “Year Zero,” which came in 2nd place with 186,651 copies sold. The industrial rock band, made up of frontman Trent Reznor and a rotating cast of supporting musicians, is a “concept album” that describes Reznor’s forecast of how the United States government’s current policies will impact the world fifteen years in the future.

Ex-“American Idol” finalist Bucky Covington comes in at # 4 with his self-titled debut, a country album that manages to outpace established country powerhouse Martina McBride this week, whose “Waking Up Laughing” climbed to # 5.

Country music factors largely in this week’s Top 10, as Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood take spots 9 and 10, respectively.

The Top 10 Hot Downloaded Singles chart looks much the same as last week, with two exceptions: Carrie Underwood climbs back into the Top 10 following her triple-win at the CMT Music Awards, and rap group Bone Thugs and Harmony make a huge leap from # 37 to # 4, with a little help from Akon.

Akon, through collaborations and his own solo single, actually occupies three spots in a row on the Top 10 this week.

Next week sees new releases from Tori Amos, Michael Buble, and Ne-Yo.

Below are Billboard’s Top 10 Album and Top 10 Downloaded Singles charts for the week.
