As expected, Maroon 5 topped the Billboard 200 album chart with the debut of their latest release, “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.” Bolstered by the advance release of the smash single “Makes Me Wonder” (along with their appearance on “American Idol”), the album sold an impressive 429,484 copies — nearly 300,000 more than the debut sales of their last album, “Songs About Jane,” in 2004.
Linkin Park slipped to # 2 this week, after spending last week in the top spot with the highest-selling debut of 2007, “Minutes to Midnight.” While it didn’t reach the 600,000+ sales of its debut, the album sold a still-formidable 197,640 copies in its second week of release.
Ozzy Osbourne proved he can still rock (and sell albums) after taking a six year break from recording. His latest, “Black Rain,” debuted at # 3 with 151,991 copies sold. Billboard notes that nearly a quarter of those sales came from digital retailers, which offered early ticketing to this summer’s Ozzfest with pre-orders for the limited edition of the album. “Black Rain” is Ozzy’s highest-charting debut of his career, and it also marks another milestone for the legendary rocker — he recorded it clean and sober.
Ozzy recently told Access about the new experience of recording an album without the influence of alcohol or drugs. “It was a lot easier than I thought it [would be],” he explained. “I was building this big thing, ‘I cant do it without alcohol or drugs’….I had to do a deal with myself: if it got to the point that I was going to jump off the wagon again, I would just forget about it.”
Clearly, Young Jeezy’s disorderly conduct charge didn’t upset his album sales this week, as the # 4 spot belongs to him and his U.S.D.A. collaborators, Slick Pulla and Blood Raw. The trio’s “Cold Summer: The Authorized Mixtape” sold 95,125 copies upon its debut.
The Top 10’s final debut comes from modern rock group “the Used” at # 5, with “Lies for the Liars.”
Daughtry, Michael Buble, Carrie Underwood, Avril Lavigne and Ne-Yo round out the Top 10 this week.
Rihanna made a big splash on the Hot Downloaded Singles chart (with a little help from Jay-Z), as “Umbrella” debuts at # 1 with 276,705 downloads. Rap group Shop Boyz debut at # 2 with their latest single, “Party Like a Rockstar.”
This year’s “American Idol” Jordin Sparks also made a Top 10 debut with her first single, “This Is My Now,” at # 9 — while “Idol” runner-up Blake Lewis came in close behind at # 11 with his beat-boxy cover of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name.”
