Billy’s Blog: 9/11 Bedtime Blog

A blog entry written by Billy Bush on September 11, 2011.

I cried today on 9/11. A searing and graphic documentary on the Smithsonian channel made me feel it again. Photos of children who have grown up to look so much like the parent they lost 10 years ago, set to music, made the tears fall hard. Thank God I cried. I need to know I can still feel it.

However, one thing still bothers me: We are clearly not united NOW like we were in the aftermath ten years ago. We’re divided. Deeply and sadly. Doesn’t it feel like those who disagree, denigrate and castigate? Our politics are poison.

We all want to be able to say those 2,977 people who died on 9/11 did NOT do so entirely in vain.

10 years later…the argument doesn’t feel so strong. Our understanding of terrorism is more advanced but our understanding of each other feels a lot less.

In short: Fine to disagree. Better to compromise. Crucial to respect. We gotta do better for the children of those who died and for each other.
