There’s a
new “Blade Runner” in town – but the old one might have something to
say about it.
The first
footage from the anticipated sci-fi sequel “Blade Runner 2049” was
released on Monday, and features franchise newcomer Ryan Gosling alongside
original star Harrison Ford.
According to
a synopsis from Alcon Entertainment, the long-awaited follow-up takes place 30
years after the first film. Ryan plays LAPD Officer K, who “unearths a
long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into
chaos.”

Harrison reprises his role as former LAPD blade runner Rick Deckard, who has been missing for decades.
“I did your job once. I was good at it,” Harrison tells Ryan in the clip, while pointing a gun as the men cross paths inside a desolate building.

“Things were simpler then,” Ryan replies.
Director Denis Villeneuve appears to have paid homage to Ridley Scott’s now-iconic aesthetic from the 1982 classic, depicting the same dystopian vision of Los Angeles while also incorporating a dusty, barren landscape in which Ryan and Harrison’s characters meet.
In a voiceover narration, Harrison repeats one of Deckard’s well-known lines from the original movie, possibly hinting that the battle between humans and androids hasn’t made much progress.

“Replicants are like any other machine – they’re either a benefit or a hazard,” the actor says. “If they’re a benefit, it’s not my problem.”
Co-starring Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, Lennie James, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto, “Blade Runner 2049” arrives in theaters Oct. 6, 2017.
