Bob Schieffer Signs Off From ‘CBS Evening News’

NEW YORK (August 31, 2006) — “CBS Evening News” anchor Bob Schieffer bid an emotional farewell on Thursday evening.

Schieffer took over the anchor chair after Dan Rather’s rocky departure. He was expected to stay just six weeks, but in the end lasted 18-months and boosted ratings.

Katie Couric, who makes her much-hyped debut Tuesday, made an appearance on the show, voicing a profile of Schieffer and briefly interviewing him. Schieffer and Couric both choked up in the taped interview as Schieffer credited the women in his life – his mother, wife and daughters – along with colleagues for his success.

In the broadcast’s live conclusion, Schieffer thanked viewers for allowing him into their homes and inviting him back.

Schieffer is not retiring. He’ll continue filing reports for CBS from Washington, but says he’s looking forward to a little less stress.
