Candice King On (Briefly) Meeting The Pope & What’s Next For Caroline On ‘Vampire Diaries’

“Vampire Diaries” actress Candice King, nee Accola, had an encounter of the holy kind recently, when she met the Pope.

When Access Hollywood spoke with The CW star as she promoted the Season 7 return of her Thursday night drama, we had to ask about her recent Instagram photos that showed the pregnant star getting a blessing from the Pope.

“My husband’s band was performing for the big event in Philadelphia, on Saturday night, so it was The Fray and Aretha Franklin and Andrea Bocelli. [It was this] incredible event with the World Meeting of the Families. It was all to honor the Pope and so I got to go out and just support my husband and there was a very last minute opportunity to meet the Pope and I still can’t believe my husband was able to say the words, ‘Can you please bless our child?’ and was able to take pictures without dropping the phone, while we’re all, I think, shaking, a little bit,” Candice said (her husband is Joe King of The Fray). “But it was a very quick moment that was so just incredibly – it all happened at lightning speed, but it was a huge honor, a literal blessing and an unforgettable moment that we will cherish talking about at many dinner parties to come.”

On Thursday night, the topic of conversation in many “TVD” fans’ households will be the show’s Season 7 premiere. Although Nina Dobrev left the show, the series continues in such a way that her character, Elena Gilbert (who is in a sleep-state), is in everyone’s thoughts.

“Caroline doesn’t view Elena’s state as necessarily a loss. Caroline has eternal life on her side and so she has a lot of hope when it pertains to Elena and them seeing each other again,” Candice told Access. “In as far as staying connected to Elena, I love the scene at the end of Season 6, and Elena asking Caroline and Bonnie, ‘Write it all down. Write everything down so I don’t miss a moment of it.’ And so we’re gonna see Caroline living up to her word, and she’s going to be documenting everything that happened so when she does see Elena again, Elena really hasn’t missed a moment of anything. And so, I like that this season, even though we’re not were not going to necessarily see Elena, we’re going to feel the presence of her character throughout the series.”

Caroline Forbes turned off her humanity in Season 6 after she lost her mom, Liz Forbes. This season, she’ll continue to deal with her grief, which will come in different stages. As she processes her pain, Stefan will be there. So what is the status of Steroline as the season begins?

“Caroline definitely cares for Stefan, but she wants to take care of herself first,” Candice said. “So we’re going to see her really trying hard to take care of herself and approach grief head on, but she’s realizing it’s a little difficult to be around Stefan and to not let her feelings for him take over as well, so we’re going to see her kind of struggling with that a little bit as we come into Season 7.”

As fans know, Season 7 brings in some new villains. Lily’s family has taken up residence in Mystic Falls and the heretics are going to cause big, big problems.

“She does not like what they’re doing to Mystic Falls and she wants them gone,” Candice said, of Caroline’s feelings over the newcomers. “There’s no middle ground for her. She wants them gone, so we’re going to see Caroline struggle with [that] as the season begins and as the season goes on.”

Just like with other villains from past seasons, the newest Mystic Falls residents won’t go easily.

“The heretics are very powerful and they’re very strong,” she said.

“They are quite ruthless and there’s not really any fairness [in] the way that they go about getting what they want. So, they’re definitely creating many obstacles for all of our characters in Mystic Falls to compete with,” Candice added.

“The Vampire Diaries” returns Thursday night at 8/7c on The CW.
