Carly Rae Jepsen Talks Boyfriend & New, Darker Music: I’m ‘Excited’ To Show A ‘Different Side Of Me’

Carly Rae Jepsen can rock a bubbly pop song with ease, but will the “Call Me Maybe” singer’s music soon take a darker turn?

The 27-year-old Canadian star says fans will hear a new sound when her next single is released – and she’s looking forward to the change!

“I’m really excited, actually, for the new year to show a different side of me,” she told Kit Hoover and Billy Bush on Friday’s Access Hollywood Live, hinting at a more angst-tinged sound to come.

Though she’s experienced incredible commercial success with her upbeat anthems (including her breakout megahit “Call Me Maybe,” followed by “Good Time” with Owl City), Carly said she can’t wait to release her next tune – a “breakup song.”

“It’s been fun to do kind of feel-good songs, but I think the next single, ‘Tonight I’m Getting Over You,’ is something I’m really looking forward to,” she said with a smile.

While she may have dealt with past heartbreak through song, the singer is currently happily head over heels for boyfriend Matthew Koma – a musician she met while writing “This Kiss” alongside LMFAO’s Redfoo.

“The three of us kind of [wrote] the whole [song] over phone calls and e-mails and text messages, believe it or not… but that’s how it happened!” she said. “And then [Matt] came to record the vocal and I was like, ‘Oh… Hello!’”

Despite her skyrocketing fame and success, Carly – who is nominated for two Grammys and will attend Sunday’s big show — said she has yet to splurge on any specific item. She will, however, shell out cash to spend time with her loved ones.

“I think the main thing I spend money on is flights,” she said, when asked if she’s made any big purchases since hitting the big time. “Flights home and flights for my family to come to the Grammys and be a part of that.

“[I’ll spend money on flights] because the one big sacrifice [with a music career] is time apart from the people that you love,” she added.
