Wilson Phillips is back.
Six years after the group’s last album, 2004’s “California,” Wendy Wilson, Carnie Wilson and Chynna Phillips are making a comeback with a Christmas album – and a fresh start after health concerns that made headlines.
“You know, I’m probably always going to struggle with weight, whether I want to lose 50, 20 [pounds],” Carnie told Access Hollywood at a photo shoot for the trio’s new album cover. “But thank God it’s less than 50. I’m proud of saying that and I’ve kept off a hundred pounds. That’s a good position to be in.”
For her part, Chynna filed for divorce from husband Billy Baldwin in February before withdrawing the papers a day later– as well as checking herself into rehab for anxiety earlier that month. Now, Chynna says she’s all good on both fronts.
“I’m good. Billy and I are doing great, very, very grateful to have gotten through that difficult time,” Chynna said. “We’re doing very well and I always tell my friends, it’s so true, that once you’ve sort of hit the bottom, there’s nowhere else to go but up.”
She added that things are better than ever with the Baldwin brother.
“I feel like Billy and I just have broken through to a brand new level of intimacy and happiness in our marriage,” she said.
“We weren’t as comfortable in our own skin back then and now we feel really confident about ourselves,” Wendy added of the group’s evolution since their 1990 self-titled debut album. “We’re older and just being a mom, you learn so much about yourself.”
Being moms made it tricky to schedule studio time, but the group made it happen.
“We would have made the record even in Carnie’s studio at home ‘cause we were that determined to get a Christmas record out there,” Chynna said. “But Sony came through. They just knocked on our door and said, ‘Would you guys be interested in doing a Christmas record?’, and we were all over it.”
Though it had been a while, Wendy said the three didn’t have any rust when it came to singing together.
“It’s beyond natural,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 years, two years, 20 years. We just always fit right in the same place.”
