Chris Pine Talks Star Trek Nerves & Resisting Hollywood Temptations: Drugs Are Not ‘Interesting To Me’

Chris Pine has earned the status of a Hollywood leading man, but the “Star Trek” actor has no interest in falling prey to the dangerous pitfalls of fame – especially when it comes to partying.

“Drugs were never interesting to me,” the 32-year-old old told Esquire UK (via the Huffington Post UK) of resisting Hollywood debauchery. “With drinking, you slowly learn how much you can handle, but with drugs I just don’t know what the f**k they are or what they do.”

The actor credits his introverted nature as a child with helping to keep him on the straight and narrow.

“Also, I was a shy kid, a late bloomer,” he said. “At 22, I was probably 16 emotionally.”

Chris will return to role of “Star Trek’s” Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated sequel, but admitted he was never a “trekkie.”

“I wasn’t a fan of ‘Star Trek’. It didn’t excite me,” he told the mag. “All I wanted at that time was a part that I really connected to and when my agent said, ‘Star Trek’, I said, ‘No! Have you not been hearing anything I’ve said? ‘Star Trek’ is the furthest thing from what I want to do.’”

Despite his initial resistance, the actor approached the revered role with respect.

“‘Star Trek’ scared me a lot. It terrified me, really, because of the scale, the responsibility, the fact that it was this iconic character,” he said. “It was the bigger challenge. So I had to take it.”

“Star Trek Into Darkness” hits theaters on May 17.
