Chris Weitz On Directing ‘New Moon’ And ‘Breaking Dawn’ Rumors

Now that Chris Weitz has completed “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” has he received an offer to direct the fourth film, “Breaking Dawn?”

“No official offer has been made,” Chris told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ll have to see how people feel about the entire movie, not only the studio but the fans, before the verdict is out whether I direct No. 4.”

(David Slade, director of “30 Days of Night” and “Hard Candy,” is currently helming the series’ third film, “Eclipse.”)

However, “New Moon” has been buzzing with the film’s November 20 release date just a month away. Taylor Lautner has emerged as a new heartthrob, and has divided the fans into two camps – Team Edward and Team Jacob.

“There are two heartthrobs in this movie, not just Rob but Taylor Lautner,” Chris told the mag. “Part of the point was that Edward was away. Readers of the book know this and appreciate it. The story is about loss and heartache; he is present as an absence. Bella is always thinking of him and affected by him. His return to the film is really powerful and made more so by not having millions of ‘back at the ranch’ scenes.

“There are people who would like nothing more that two hours of Rob Pattinson standing there, and I sympathize with them,” Chris continued. “But I think they’ll appreciate getting him back after the second act.”

He added that Stephenie Meyer, author of “The Twilight Saga,” worked with him in adapting the bestselling novel to the big screen.

“We had some discussions that were very important — my convincing [Stephenie] that I didn’t want to take her baby and run away with it, or tell a story that was counter to the spirit of what she was trying to tell…. We got along like a house on fire,” Chris said.

“New Moon” hits theaters on November 20.
