Christie Brinkley’s Divorce Trial To Remain Open To Public

Christie Brinkley got her wish on Friday, as a New York judge ruled her upcoming divorce trial will remain open to the public and media.

Long Island Judge Mark D. Cohen made his ruling on Friday, noting, “open courtrooms, in general and in divorce actions, may provide a basis for societal education,” People reported.

Brinkley, who filed for divorce from Peter Cook in 2006, went to court on Thursday to fight a motion filed by the legal guardian of the couple’s children (and supported by Cook), which was asking for the case to be kept private.

“The required high burden of compelling reasons to close the courtroom has not been met,” Cohen added, according to People.

Under New York state law, divorce trials are open to the public unless a judge decides to hold proceedings behind closed doors.

One reason Brinkley reportedly wants the case to be made public is because she is still upset at her ex.

“She’s still spitting mad at Cook,” a source told Access Hollywood.

Norman Sheresky, the attorney for Cook, slammed Brinkley’s decision to fight to keep the case public.

“Obviously, like any father, Peter is disappointed Christie Brinkley has invited their children to attend the divorce trial,” Sheresky told People. “Why would anyone be happy about that? It’s putting herself in front of her children.”

However, an attorney for Brinkley had a very different take on the matter.

“The reality is he put himself way in front of his children and his wife when he made the awful decision to destroy the marriage. The trial will get at the truth, which is very important to Christie,” Robert Stephan Cohen told People.

Ironically, however, following the judge’s ruling on Friday, Brinkley released a statement to Access Hollywood saying, “I still remain hopeful that these matters can be resolved privately.”

Brinkley and Cook’s divorce trial is scheduled to begin July 2.
