Ciara Stands By Her & Russell Wilson’s Decision To Stay Abstinent Until Marriage

Worth
the wait. Ciara believes she and husband Russell Wilson made the right call to
remain abstinent until they got married.

In
a cover interview for February’s Cosmopolitan South Africa, the singer
reportedly revealed how the decision helped them forge an important connection
that ultimately fortified their union.

“I really believe that when you focus on a friendship,
you have the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a relationship,”
she told the mag, according to People. “And once you know you’re really
great friends and you’re what we call ‘equally yoked,’ where you share the same
values or the same outlook on life, it kind of sets the tone.”

The 31-year-old explained that because she and the Seattle Seahawks quarterback established their compatibility outside of a physical relationship, they now have a solid groundwork for the future.

“Knowing that you’ll always have the friendship and that you can always go back to it is very important, and very powerful,” she said.

Adding, “You shouldn’t feel like you have to give your body away to get someone to like you.”

Ciara also credited the NFL star for “sharing those views,” telling the mag that “it’s awesome how it all worked out.”

Russell took his and Ciara’s celibacy public back in July 2015, when the couple had only been dating for a few months. The music star told Access Hollywood Live’s Kit Hoover and guest co-host Dave Karger at the time that she wasn’t upset that her beau had spoken out about their private life.

“It was an organic thing for him and I think he was just being honest about where we are,” she said.
