Controversy Emerges Over Lane Bryant’s Sexy New Lingerie Ad

A real plus size controversy is brewing in the lingerie ad business.

Lane Bryant reps have claimed there is a double standard going on when it comes to their lingerie ads.

According to the company, it seems size does matter. The plus size label claims, at first blush, both ABC and FOX wouldn’t air their new commercial featuring models in their new Cacique lingerie line during “Dancing with the Stars” and “American Idol.”

A Victoria’s Secret ad, however, which appears to be no less alluring or revealing, as it also features models in lingerie, has aired during both shows.

The fashion retailer posted a blog, which was later taken down, where they claimed ABC and FOX would not air their ads. They wrote that ABC “restricted our airtime,” and FOX “demanded excessive re-edits and rebuffed it three times before relenting to air it during the final ten minutes of ‘American Idol,’ but only after we threatened to pull the ad buy,” according to NY Mag, which caught Lane Bryant’s blog before it was removed.

“Yes, these are the same networks that have scantily-clad housewives so desperate they seduce every man on the block — and don’t forget Bart Simpson, who has shown us the moon more often than NASA — all in what they call ‘family hour.’ … Does this smack of a double standard? Yep. It does to us, too,” Lane Bryant added.

ABC, however, told Access the only restrictions they made were that the ad is limited to the last pod, or the last 10 minutes of the show.

As for FOX, a source at the network told Access Hollywood that Lane Bryant originally wanted their spot to run in the 8 PM hour of “Idol.” That hour, however, is considered a “family hour,” so the Standards & Practices Department at the network requested changes in the spot, the source continued. The source said LB rejected the changes. In response, FOX agreed to air the spot in the 9 PM hour with no edits or changes.

FOX will air the spot next week on April 28.
