‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Donna Lynne Champlin On Paula Taking The Office Reigns

On Monday night, Paula Proctor will be taking charge on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.”

When Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) decides to try and repair her reputation in the eyes of Greg (Santino Fontana), her work will take her out of the office with Darryl (Pete Gardner). With the boss and Rebecca away, Donna Lynne Champlin’s character will be running things at the law firm.

“When Rebecca puts Paula in charge of the office, I think there’s a moment of, ‘Holy crap!’ but it’s a split second,” Donna Lynne told Access Hollywood, previewing Monday’s episode. “I think she’s really great at her job, she’s the head paralegal, and I think she looks around the office a lot and gets frustrated with the fact that a lot more work could be getting done, and I think she ends up doing a lot of other people’s jobs as well to keep that office running.”

Chaos will erupt under Paula’s rule, and folks will be running around causing some silly, but fun to watch, problems.

“We have so many wonderful guest stars coming in and playing some of the office, and so it was really a blast,” she said. “It was written so well, it was written so, so funny.”

What viewers will see on Monday night includes some material that came out of the cast improv-ing office altercations.

“That was incredibly fun as well,” she said. “I don’t want to give too much away, but Paula… she takes the reigns and she’s not messing around.”

There’s also some interoffice bonding between Paula and her coworker, Mrs. Hernandez. But, don’t expect Mrs. H to take the place of Rebecca as Paula’s bestie, despite their emotional scene.

“I think they’ve had a long standing friendship, but it’s also established that Mrs. Hernandez has her own thing. She’s got her rugby team, she’s got her Parkour stuff, she’s got this whole like crazy, ninja life outside of the office that fulfills her and Paula doesn’t,” she said. “Paula has an unhappy marriage, she has two kids that she’s having trouble raising, and so I think that’s another reason why… when Rebecca comes on the scene, Paula is like, ‘Oh! A soul sister.’ I think Mrs. Hernandez and Paula have a really great working relationship, but it’s not the same as [Paula and Rebecca].”
