‘Dancing’ Couple Karina & Maks Call Off Engagement

Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are no longer getting ready to “Dance” down the aisle.

The “Dancing With the Stars” couple has called off their engagement, a rep for Karina confirmed to Access Hollywood.

Maksim, who is partnered with Debi Mazar for the upcoming “DWTS” season, posted a message on his Twitter page on Monday which also seemed to confirm the split.

“What was meant to be a ‘life long book’, turned into a ‘chapter’…….and now that ‘chapter’ is finished…… Se la vie…,” his message read.

Karina, 31, and Maks, 29, first announced their engagement in January after Maks popped the question on New Year’s Eve in Las Vegas.

In July, the couple – who recently wrapped the Broadway dance show “Burn The Floor” together — told People their nuptials would have to wait until June 2010 due to work commitments.

“[Being on Broadway] is amazing and we love doing it, so we don’t feel like we’re missing out on the wedding dress fittings,” Karina told People at the time. “We’re not rushing. As long as we’re together, tying the knot is a plus, it’s something extra.”

Karina — who is partnered with Aaron Carter this season — and Maks will make their ballroom return when “Dancing With the Stars” premieres on September 21.
