Dancing With The Stars: All-Stars – Close Competition Heading Into The Finals

“Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars” is a week away from the finals, and the competition to get there is a close one.

On Monday night, the final five contestants took to the ballroom for two dances, and at the end of the night, just one woman seemed sure to make it into next week’s show – gymnast and former mirrorball champ Shawn Johnson.

The petite powerhouse hit the stage with her partner, pro Derek Hough, for two almost perfectly-scored routines.

The pair’s first number – a “Knight Rider” Bhangra – which combined the Indian dance with the theme of the 1980s drama, was well put together and intriguing, and it got them a standing ovation.

“Shut up! Close the door! Call me Mary,” judge Len Goodman said, using British phrases to indicate he was impressed, as the pair earned a full 30 out of 30 points. “I tell you, Miss Dynamite – [Shawn] — was fantastic.”

Their second number – an Argentine tango to Michael Jackson’s “Bad” – was dramatic for not only Shawn’s sharp movements, but for the argument it started between judges.

While it won over Len and Bruno Tonioli, judge Carrie Ann Inaba wasn’t completely sold on the number.

“Dance is sometimes more than just movement and I felt that you lacked the real passion of the Argentine tango,” she said, only to get interrupted by a protesting Bruno, who stood up and shouted, “No! No! No!”

But Carrie Ann stuck to her position and the pair lost one point from the female judge – earning a 9. The other two judges gave the couple 10s for a total score of 59 out of 60 and the leaderboard top spot.

There was little wiggle room in second place, a spot earned with a score of 57.5 out of 60, by former reality star Melissa Rycroft and her pro, Tony Dovolani.

Tony was injured, but chose to dance anyway, and the pair’s two dances – a caveman hustle, followed by an Argentine tango to “Dirty Diana,” were well received.

“That was beyond anything I could have imagined for you,” Carrie Ann said.

Just half a point down – at 57 points overall for the night (out of 60), and third place — was Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff.

The couple earned 27 points for their big top jazz routine, followed by a perfect score for their rumba to “Man In The Mirror.”

“It was fabulous,” Len said.

The final spot on the leaderboard was held by both Kelly Monaco and her partner, Valentin Chmerkovskiy, and Emmitt Smith and his pro, Cheryl Burke. Both pairs earned 54 points overall for the night.

“Dancing with the Stars” continues Tuesday at 8/7c on ABC, when two celebs will be eliminated.
