‘Dancing With The Stars’ Finals Recap: Night 1

“Dancing with the Stars” is one step closer to crowning its latest champions, but one pair won’t be making it to the final round.

(Spoiler Alert! This story contains the elimination news from Monday’s “DWTS.”)

It was a close night of scoring, but the pair not competing in Tuesday’s final? Bethany Mota and Derek Hough.

Due to a breaking news conference with President Obama, who addressed the news of the Grand Jury decision in Ferguson, the elimination was not televised on the East Coast broadcast of the show.

The three teams who will dance for the mirrorball on Tuesday are Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas, Janel Parrish and Valentin Chmerkovskiy and Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson.

Alfonso was one of the most injured celebs throughout Season 19, but it was impossible to tell on Monday night’s broadcast as he and his pro partner, Witney, achieved two perfect scores. They came out on top in the first round, recreating their jive from Week 1 (chosen by Judge Carrie Ann Inaba).

“You dance like Frank Sinatra sings,” Len Goodman said.

And some support came through on Facebook from Alfonso’s “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” co-star Will Smith. Erin Andrews read the film star’s quote on the broadcast: “With y’all’s help, they can take home that Dancing with the Stars mirrorball.”

But, it was Alfonso and Witney’s freestyle, which really wowed the crowd, a combination of modern moves and a sweet throwback to Alfonso’s history on Broadway as the “Tap Dance Kid,” as the routine included a solo tap dance portion.

“That’s how you tap your way to the top,” Bruno Tonioli commented. “I’m telling you, this really was an in your face, undeniable showstopper in the great American way.”

In close second on Monday were Sadie and Mark, who had everyone quacking over her “Duck Dynasty” inspired first routine (a samba they had performed earlier in the competition, but repeated for Len), to the tune of 38 points.

And like Alfonso and Witney, Sadie and Mark earned a perfect score for their creative “Super Mario Brothers” inspired  freestyle.

“This is one [freestyle] I will never forget,” Len said, as they earned 78 out of 80. “It was fantastic.”

Janel and Val took third with a total of 77 points – a samba from earlier in the competition to the tune of 37 points, and a gorgeous contemporary freestyle, that earned 40 points.

“Hypnotically beautiful,” Bruno said of their number, while Carrie Ann Inaba called their dance, “incredible.”

Bethany and Derek, who were eliminated, earned 36 points for the first round and 40 points for their freestyle, for a total of 76 points for the night.

The remaining three teams will dance on Tuesday night before the Season 19 champ is crowned.
