Demi Lovato: ‘Insecure Demi’ Is Gone

Demi Lovato’s latest album
title, “Confident,” truly reflects how she’s feeling.

The 23-year-old has taken
some heat for her increasingly sexier wardrobe, but Demi says she’s merely
practicing what she’s now preaching.

“I’ve
never felt as confident in my skin as I do today. A year ago, on tour, almost
every inch of my body was covered by clothing, and it was because I was hiding
behind so many layers,” Demi told Allure for their latest issue.

“Once
I started feeling better about myself, I felt better about showing more skin. I
have insecurities about my arms, so to wear a tank top on stage is extremely
liberating for me, and uncomfortable sometimes,” she continued. “It’s
also a statement, like, ‘Hey, watch out. You’re no longer getting the insecure
Demi that you’ve been getting for the past couple of years. I mean business
now.'”

The
“Cool for the Summer” singer admitted receiving “some hate”
for showing more skin and “talking about it,” but she’s brushing off
the negativity.

“It’s
like, what’s wrong with being confident enough
to wear this?” she told the mag, quoting a lyric from her song,
“Confident.”

While she’s
made admirable strides in overcoming her insecurities, Demi (is human and)
still has her down days.

She
credited longtime boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama and best friend Marissa with
helping her rise back up.

“Wilmer
is that person. Sometimes I’ll isolate a little bit. I won’t reply to people’s
text messages, or I’ll just distance myself from everyone unintentionally, and
[Marissa is] the first one to call me out on it,” she explained.
“It’s because I’m going through something. I’m stressed or
depressed.”
