Dermot Mulroney Talks Romancing The Younger Zooey Deschanel On ‘New Girl’

Zooey Deschanel gets a new love interest later this season on “New Girl” in the slightly older Dermot Mulroney – and the tall, dark and handsome actor told AccessHollywood.com’s Laura Saltman how he wins Jess’ heart.

“I’m a parent of one of her students,” he said of how his character meets the teacher, played by the spectacled star.

“I’m some sort of CEO,” he further explained. “The way they shoot this TV show, they kind of give the information to you as you go. They don’t really give it to you in advance.”

Dermot said his character’s age will play a factor in his multi-episode story arc.

“I think that’s part of the story line,” he said. “What I think in the show is that these group of roommates are all kind of too old to be acting like they do, and they’re trying to figure out what the next part of their life’s going to be. So some of that plays into the age difference between the character I play and the character Zooey plays.”

“And, is she having some difficulties in the fact that you’re an older man or is she OK with it?” Laura asked.

“Well, so far we seem to be getting along fine,” Dermot said. “She’s not sure — sort of along the lines of what you said. And as I said, I’ll stick around as long as they’ll have me.”

First up though, before Dermot comes into the mix, is “True Blood” hunk Ryan Kwanten, who will appear in the show’s Valentine’s Day episode.

“That episode, Jess goes out to look for a one night stand and finds Ryan Kwanten in a bar — which is not bad,” Zooey told Laura.

“So does her one night stand [dream] come true?” Laura asked.

“Sort of,” the “adorkable” star teased “I don’t want to give away [everything]… Maybe!”

“New Girl” airs Tuesday nights at 9/8c on FOX.
