Dexter Stars Talk Season 7: What’s Next For Dexter & Deb?

“Dexter” returns for its seventh season on September 30 and the revelation in the Season 6 finale – where Jennifer Carpenter’s Deb realized her adopted brother Michael C. Hall’s Dexter is a killer — marks an incredible shift in the drama.

“I think it is, without a doubt, the most fundamentally game changing development as we’ve had since we started telling this story,” Michael said on Monday at the Showtime portion of the Television Critics Association summer tour in Beverly Hills. “One of the things that we’ve always been able to count on is that Dexter’s secret is his own and it’s not anymore and it’s been so invigorating to play these scenes.”

Jennifer said the shocking twist is something she has been hungry for, for a long time.

“I have been looking forward to it,” she said. “I’ve been very curious about how they would write it and also terrified about it… All of the anxiety I’m feeling as an actor is exactly where Deborah is supposed to be.”

“Dexter” is expected to wrap up its run on Showtime at the end of the eighth season and Michael said he’s feeling the movement of the march toward the end.

“I think her finding out does sort of make an end game feel a little more palpable and imminent. I think that the plan is to do this season and a final eighth season… and to really tell the story of the two of them negotiating their relationship in this new landscape,” he said.

Currently shooting the sixth episode of Season 7, Jennifer said it is a more treacherous world this time around with the secret no longer a secret.

“It’s very dangerous this year,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Showtime’s President of Entertainment hinted that while the plan is to end “Dexter” after Season 8, he would be open to the show sticking around.

Asked during the “Dexter” panel for his thoughts on extending the series in which he stars, Michael suggested it was unlikely, but he wouldn’t rule it out.

“We finished the first season and I thought we should probably just stop, [like], ‘What are we gonna do now?’ I would never say never, but I think the sense is that we’re moving toward a definitive end,” he said.

“Dexter’s” Season 7 premieres on Sunday, September 30 at 9 PM on Showtime.
