Diane Lane Talks Marriage, Plastic Surgery & ‘Being The Underdog’

Diane Lane has been a respected force in Hollywood for over 30 years, but the Oscar-nominated actress (for 2002’s “Unfaithful”) — who got her start at the age of 14 in the 1979 movie “A Little Romance” — says the early fame was incredibly overwhelming.

“I wanted to hide like a mouse under a chair until it passed,” Diane told Ladies Home Journal for its October 2010 issue. “It was like I was standing there and got hit by a lightning bolt. My fame was not earned.”

The star of movies including “Under the Tuscan Sun” and “Nights in Rodanthe” moved to Hollywood as a teenager and immediately caught the eye of many of leading men, including Jon Bon Jovi and Timothy Hutton. Diane soon married Christopher Lambert (with whom she had her now 17-year-old daughter, Eleanor), but divorced six years later.

Being a single mom became Diane’s favorite dating deterrent, but the screen siren said her plans were thwarted when she met Josh Brolin (her current husband) in 2002.

“My thing was always, ‘Stay away, I have a young kid,’” she says. “And [Josh] was like, ‘Oh, yeah? Well, so do I.’ It was like, ‘Oh, okay. Come on in.’”

The seemingly ageless beauty admits that she’s torn when it comes to the subject of plastic surgery.

“Some days I want to get the boob job, some days I want to get the eye lift,” she confessed. “Then other days I’m like, ‘Absolutely not! Have some integrity! … But it’s all about what makes you happy.”

While many starlets soon fade into obscurity, Diane said she takes pride in her Hollywood longevity.

“I have a sort of lip-smacking gratification that I’m still playing in the game,” she said. “I feel I have more to offer…and that I’m being allowed to. That’s the biggest gift. It’s wonderful being the underdog.”

Diane can next be seen starring alongside John Malkovich in “Secretariat,” the true story of a female racehorse owner, when the movie hits theaters on October 8.
