Did Murdoch Jump The Gun On ‘Borat 2’ News?

Fresh off his sweeping success at the box office, “Borat” is ready to come back and give moviegoers another “High five!”

But when a sequel to the hit comedy will arrive seems to be up in the air and some suggest Rupert Murdoch may have jumped the gun in announcing the “Borat” follow-up with Fox on Thursday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

“He will do a sequel. He will first do something else? then he wants to come back and do a ‘Borat 2,’” Murdoch revealed at Media Summit New York this week.

The “something else” Murdoch mentioned is likely the “Bruno” project (based on another of his characters from “Da Ali G Show”), which Universal recently locked up for a reported $42 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

However, according to folks at Twentieth Century Fox – which produced the first “Borat” film – preliminary discussions have been held regarding a sequel, but nothing is even close to an official project.

“We’re eager to work with Sacha again, and we’ve had casual discussions about a sequel, which we’d love to do, but at this point it remains too preliminary to discuss,” Chris Petrikin, senior vp, corporate communications at Fox, told the Hollywood Reporter.

And while Murdoch may have been a bit premature in his announcement, one thing that is not up for debate is the mogul’s enthusiasm for the pic.

During a press conference, Murdoch reportedly said he had seen the first “Borat” three times and ?laughed like hell.”
