Dish Of Salt: Wednesday TV Dish (‘Castle’ & Beckett: Hot Or Not?)

Yesterday, I was on the set of ABC’s hit show “Castle” as they taped their season finale episode. Part of the fun of the show is the whole “Will they or won’t they get together?” aspect of the relationship between the two main characters. Why do the stars of the show disagree so drastically on taking the relationship to the next level? Plus, is the “American Idol” tour coming to a city near you? The answer in today’s Dish.

Castle & Beckett – Hot or Not?

He’s the murder-mystery novel writer who helps the NYPD solve crimes. She’s the detective who he has partnered with (and the basis for a character in his next book). Fans love the continuing romantic tension between the characters Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) on “Castle.” As I found out, when I visited the show’s set in the finale (airing May 17) they take that tension and turn it on its head – thanks to former “Battlestar Galactica” hottie Michael Trucco. Michael plays a robbery detective who becomes romantically involved with Beckett. His first episode aired April 19.

“Michael Trucco comes in as a love interest for Beckett’s character, in these last four episodes of the season, and in the season finale it kind of comes to a head,” show star Stana explained. “It’s kind of like Castle is not just going to hang around and watch his girl fall in love with someone else. He is somebody that is formidable, I guess as a competition for Castle, which I think is really great because it also creates questions for Castle like, ‘Why I haven’t I jumped on this yet, really?’”

Michael said his character knows something is up between Castle and Beckett. “My character is a detective,” he joked. “He’s been around the block! He’s figured this one out.”

He’ll have to fight to keep his woman and the potential love triangle is further complicated when Castle’s first ex-wife returns in the finale episode. However, it turns out the stars of the show don’t actually agree on whether or not Castle and Beckett should get romantically involved and become an on-screen couple.

“I watched ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ the other day and I loved that they were married and yet there was still so much more to learn about each other,” Stana explained. “I love the concept of people, even though they are married, finding the passion and that zest for each other. I think that there is a whole realm of possibility and I think that being afraid of the two of them getting together, I think that we shortchange the possibility of television and of entertainment and of storylines.”

Nathan, however, has the opposite opinion. “You can say, ‘Oh I love the show. I love the show. I really want them to get together.’ Then you really don’t love the show. You are not thinking clearly,” he explained to the show’s fans. “If they get together, it’s over. It’s a little something called ‘kaput’ in show business!”

Hmmm. They both make good points but then again, when David and Addison got together on “Moonlighting” it turned out to be a show killer. So, I think I will side with Nathan on this one! Keep Castle and Beckett apart!

Ealy On “Californication”

Michael Ealy, who starred in the intensely brilliant Showtime series “Sleeper Cell,” returns to Showtime for a five-episode arc on “Californication.” He will be brought in for a love interest for Natascha McElhone’s character, the ex-wife of David Duchovny’s Hank Moody. Showtime also announced this week that Rob Lowe will guest star during “Californication’s” fourth season as an actor looking to play David’s character in a movie based on a book he wrote about his affair with a 16-year-old. No premiere date has been set yet for the fourth season. In the meantime, Lowe can be seen on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” on May 13.
