Mary and Matthew fans are just a few weeks away from the Season 3 U.S. premiere of “Downton Abbey” on PBS and actor Dan Stevens warned fans to be wary of “spoilers.”
“As one tabloid journalist confessed to me…‘It doesn’t matter what is actually said, we can take it all wildly out of context anyway. And if no one’s said anything very pertinent or newsworthy, well, we just make it up,’” the actor told Town & Country magazine, in a new interview.
The delightful actor is currently starring on Broadway in “The Heiress” and he is still getting used to being recognized on the New York City streets by “Downton” fans.
“I feel as though I’m a long way from home but that it has followed me. The enthusiasm here is so great,” he said.
Dan admitted he was drawn to the script from his very first read of the project from creator Julian Fellowes.
“It had tongue and cheek nods to modernity, which I enjoyed,” he told the mag.
Julian also spoke to the magazine and revealed why Dan was perfect for the part of the positively perfect Matthew.
“We were looking for a young man who was handsome, of course, but who conveyed a real sense of uprightness. Not an antihero but a real hero – someone who, at the same time, seemed strong and rigorous and interesting,” Julian said. “Dan seemed to possess all these qualities. He is able to make a kind of niceness sympathetic in a way that harks back to an earlier tradition: Jack Hawkins or Kenneth More or Gary Cooper or Cary Grant.”
“Downton Abbey” Season 3 premieres January 6 at 9 PM on PBS.
