The “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise remains one of the most memorable film series from the 1980s, but it could become a television show, according to a new report.
On Tuesday evening, Vulture reported that Eddie Murphy, Shawn Ryan (creator of “The Shield”) and Sony Pictures Television are working on making a TV show, inspired by the films, into a reality.
The group reportedly was pitching the project to networks on Tuesday.
Murphy, who starred as Axel Foley in the films, would not only executive produce alongside Ryan, but appear in an unnamed role in the show – likely the father of Foley’s son.
Asked by Rolling Stone’s November 2011 issue if “Beverly Hills Cop IV” was on the cards, Murphy hinted of the push to TV.
“They’re not doing it,” he said at the time. “What I’m trying to do with ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley’s son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit. I’d do the pilot, show up here and there. None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force this premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn’t be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong.”
A rep for Murphy didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from Access Hollywood on Tuesday about the reported project.
