Emilia Clarke: ‘You’re Really Seeing The Targaryen’ In Dany In ‘Game Of Thrones’

Daenerys Targaryen is set to develop as a leader in new ways when “Game of Thrones” returns April 12 on HBO.

And she’ll do so with the help of her dragons!

“I thing Daenerys is learning how to wield their power, if I’m honest, and this season is such an exciting one for her because she’s got more fire in her belly than she’s ever had before,” Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, The Mother of Dragons, told Access Hollywood at the show’s Season 5 premiere in San Francisco. “You’re really seeing the Targaryen in her come out and that’s kind of riveting and exciting, so she might make some mistakes, but she makes up for them later on in the season.”

The actress said the new season of “Game of Thrones” will satisfy.

“It’s an incredibly satisfying season I think, for audiences to be watching. I think a lot of the things we have all been hoping for are beginning to come together a little bit more,” she told Access. “That light at the end of the tunnel is growing brighter and made for such a glorious filming experience for me.”

Emilia said just reading the words on the page for Season 5 was a thrill.

“I had [goose bumps] reading the scripts and I am just as excited as everyone else to see how it’s turned out,” she said.

Although Emilia’s character, Daenerys, locked two of her dragons up at the end of “Game of Thrones” Season 4, there is plenty of dragon action.

“That’s the idea. The tennis balls were flying in filming,” Emilia said of shooting Season 5.

Tennis balls are actually one of the props used behind the scenes when the show has to CGI in the mythical creatures. In fact, Emilia revealed that in one heartbreaking scene in Season 4 – when Daenerys has to chain up Viserion and Rhaegal – she had to act opposite a piece of clothing.

“It was incredibly emotional and quite a funny one to film because there was so much emotion there for her, but in reality, I’m chaining up a green Styrofoam sock… with a lovely man at the end of a long pole,” she said.

“Game of Thrones” returns April 12 at 9 PM ET/PT on HBO.
