‘Fantastic Four’ Cast Handles ‘Awkward’ Interview Like Superheroes

The cast of “Fantastic Four” showed superhero restraint when confronted with insensitive questions during a recent interview.

Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell stopped by the Rock 100.5 morning show in Atlanta on July 30 to talk with hosts Southside Steve – real name Steven J. Rickman – and Jason Bailey. Things got off to a tense start when the DJs teased the actors about not having seen the movie yet, but the conversation took an even rougher turn when Bailey expressed confusion about Mara and Jordan’s characters.

“Am I missing something?” Bailey began, referring to onscreen siblings Sue (Mara) and Johnny Storm (Jordan).

“You’re white and you’re black,” he said, gesturing to the duo. “How does that happen?”

“They could be raised as brother and sister,” Jordan cooly replied. “There’s a whole bunch of family dynamics that could be without the obvious adoption.”

As for Rickman, he couldn’t believe Mara had traded her long, auburn locks for a new pixie cut.

“You’re way, way hot,” the shock jock told the actress. “Why’d you cut the hair? … Your hair was beautiful.”

“You don’t like it, I can tell,” Mara responded with sarcastic cheerfulness. “This is a great interview.”

“I cut my hair for a movie I just did,” she explained, but the DJ pressed on.

“What would you cut your hair for?” he continued.

“They asked me to!” she said. “I’m an actress. I have to be a chameleon.”

Rickman revisited the topic when asking about the movie’s franchise potential.

“And you’re gonna grow your hair back out a little bit?” he asked Mara of future “Fantastic Four” films.

Bailey jumped in to ask if his colleague was being “creepy,” but Rickman had something else he wanted to mention.

“I’m a toe guy,” he told Mara. “Your toes are fine.”

“Wow,” Mara responded, as a producer interjected to wrap the segment.

The hosts both acknowledged the “awkward” interview on Twitter:

Bailey later discussed the conversation in greater detail with BuzzFeed, saying he was “curious about the whole brother and sister thing” and simply wanted to know if “this hipster version” of the series would have an explanation.

As for Rickman’s line of questioning, Bailey said he had “no idea” and offered a suggestion.

“Steve likes girls’ toes,” Bailey told the outlet. “People should be appreciative when they get complimented.”

“Fantastic Four” hits theaters on Aug. 7.
