The iconic ticking stopwatch may not be on the set, but CBS is playing up a “60 Minutes” connection as Scott Pelley begins work Monday as the new “CBS Evening News” anchor.
Pelley replaces Katie Couric, hoping to pull CBS’ daily newscast out of the ratings cellar where it lies behind NBC’s “Nightly News” and ABC’s “World News.”
Pelley is a correspondent on “60 Minutes,” and he’ll remain in that job. In advertisements heralding his ascension at the evening news, CBS has Pelley’s picture and an image of the stopwatch with the words: “What if you can have the world-class original reporting of ‘60 Minutes’ every weeknight? Well, now you can.”
Pelley’s new daily competitors are Brian Williams at top-rated NBC and Diane Sawyer at ABC.
