‘The Flash’ Cast Drops Hints About Earth 2 Harrison Wells

Earth 2 Harrison Wells arrived in the heart of S.T.A.R. Labs on last Tuesday night’s “The Flash.”

As Season 2 continues, don’t expect the Earth 2 doppelganger to have much in common with the late Earth 1 Harrison. But, he might have a few things in common with the man that took over his form in Season 1 – Eobard Thawne.

“He’s multifaceted. There’s a bunch of layers,” Tom Cavanagh told AccessHollywood.com, when we asked him during a reporter set visit last week if his new character had any similarities to last season’s man from the future.

The erased-from-existence Eobard gave Barry a gift that arrived at the start of the newest season – a taped confession to the murder of Nora Allen. Earth 2 Harrison may have only just arrived, but we had to ask the man who plays Detective Joe West what kind of complications that could present in the weeks ahead (assuming Earth 2 Harrison goes out in public, of course).

“Well, with me, I don’t trust the first Harrison, so if the new guy shows up looking like the first Harrison, I don’t trust him either. So you’ll see a lot of that,” Jesse L. Martin said.

“He comes back and he’s even less cool than he was before,” Jesse continued. “That’s the only way I can put it. I was going to use a Cisco term like, ‘He’s a dick.’ But yeah… he presents a whole lot of problems for me, just looking at him. … First of all, I can’t believe there’s another earth. I can’t get around that, so like things keep popping out of this other earth and they keep looking like people we’ve seen before, so I’m like, ‘That’s the same guy! It’s not a different guy. That’s the same guy!’ So that’s where Joe is with the whole thing.”

Tom played a big role in helping to shape the new version of Harrison viewers and the characters will encounter in the weeks ahead.

“It wasn’t written that way,” Tom said when a reporter asked about new Wells, using Jesse’s description.

“This seemed to me to be a massive opportunity to turn the tables. [With] Eobard as Harrison last year, there was a certain intelligence and charm and mannered way to him – a thoughtfulness. And I think the expectation was, this same person coming from Earth 2 would be like that and my thought was, ‘Why?’ And if he’s much more brusque and arrogant and generates conflict then I think all the better for the show and all the better for me to play that,” Tom said.

Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen had his guard up when Jay Garrick (Teddy Sears) came to town, but “The Flash” star hinted that his character won’t react the same way with Earth 2 Harrison.

Initially, it’s “shock, confusion and fear,” Grant told reporters.

“But he moves on pretty quickly because we’re grasping this Earth 2 idea and you know, it’s not him – it’s not the same guy. … It’s the actual guy that Barry always idolized and looked up to, but it’s from a different world. But it’s weird cause it’s not Eobard Thawne now. It’s actually Harrison wells. It’s like Barry’s wanting to trust him and he’s actually – like in a way – quicker to trust him than he was to trust Jay when Jay shows up, which is kind of confusing. … They have a very interesting relationship… We’re shooting [Episode] 9 now and the layers are still getting peeled back.”

“The Flash” continues Tuesday at 8/7c on The CW.
