‘The Flash’ & ‘Supergirl’ To Have Pair Of Musical Crossover Episodes

Musical crossover episodes are coming to “The
Flash” and “Supergirl” in the back half of The CW shows’ new
seasons.

Executive Producer Greg Berlanti announced the news on
Thursday during The CW portion of The Television Critics Association Summer Tour,
an idea that came about because of the amount of singers among the two shows’
casts.

“The Flash” boasts “Glee” alum Grant
Gustin, Carlos Valdes (who is a singer and songwriter) and original Broadway
“Rent” cast member Jesse L. Martin, while “Supergirl” has
“Glee” alum Melissa Benoist and former “Smash” star Jeremy
Jordan.

All are likely to sing in the musical crossover episodes, and joining them could be John Barrowman of “Arrow,” and Victor Garber of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” (and before that, “The Flash”), Berlanti noted when AccessHollywood.com asked about the singers among the casts during the panel session.

Asked how the concept went from being a fun idea, to becoming something they are actually planning to do (and if the episodes would be stand-alone or fantasy), Berlanti explained it would have been a wasted opportunity if they hadn’t utilized the casts’ musical talents.

“I’ve probably been leading the charge myself just because my own personal living in the nexus of loving musicals and loving superheroes,” Berlanti said.

“So many times it’s a musical episode off the set between cameras rolling and I think on the all shows, we love to use all the characters’ talents as much as possible. We’ve toyed with who potentially the villain could kind of be. My sense is we’ll be very careful about how it is they kind of break into song, that there’ll probably be an element of being in some character or characters heads at the time, just so that we’re sort of being delicate in terms of how we navigate those waters, but it’s many episodes away,” he continued. “But we are going to start combing through the music and talking about the possibilities. And again, yeah, I think just as a fan of both genres, myself, to have an opportunity to — with all these different individuals who have so much extraordinary talent, to not tap into it in that way, I feel like we would’ve missed an opportunity and so that’s our hope.”
